A VERY AMERICAN FAMILY LIVED AND DIED in a small town on the shores of a glacial lake carved out of the vast midwestern prairie about halfway between the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers.

This will be my story, informed by my memories and interpretations, my prejudices and guesses. It is informed by insights I gained as a newspaper reporter over 44 years, most of them at The New York Times, and as a student for longer.
